An internal revolt against U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is reportedly gaining momentum at the Pentagon. Insiders unhappy with his performance have begun regularly leaking information to the media about his “strange behavior,” while in the White House, according to journalist and Donald Trump biographer Michael Wolff, officials have already concluded that Hegseth needs to be fired, The Daily Beast reports.

In his HOWL newsletter, Wolff writes that the steady stream of leaks from the Pentagon is linked to Hegseth’s growing unpopularity both within the Defense Department and the White House.

“Daily leaks about his blunders, stupidity, breaches of protocol and strange behavior — his wife has effectively moved into the Pentagon and become his right-hand woman — have become part of a growing resistance aimed at forcing him out,” Wolff claims.

According to the journalist, the campaign against Hegseth has already reached the White House. “In the White House, the president’s inner circle believes Hegseth should be fired — yesterday. Everyone is alarmed, genuinely frightened. He has no supporters left anywhere,” Wolff writes.

There is, however, one person who continues to support the defense secretary: Donald Trump himself.

According to Wolff, Hegseth’s problems are reflected even in the nicknames his colleagues have given him. He previously reported that Hegseth’s former boss at Fox News, Roger Ailes, called him “Colonel Vodka” because he constantly talked about his service in the National Guard and was known for his fondness for alcohol.

This week, The Daily Beast also reported another nickname Hegseth has acquired at the Pentagon: “No Tab Pete.” It refers to the fact that his military uniform did not display special insignia such as Ranger and Sapper tabs, which indicate specialized training and particular combat skills.

The role of Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer Hegseth, has also raised questions. Pentagon officials are reportedly concerned that she exercises excessive influence over her husband’s decisions.

In August, The New York Times, citing more than 20 current and former Defense Department employees, reported that Jennifer has been actively involved in Hegseth’s decision-making. According to the newspaper, she has even personally interviewed candidates for positions at the Pentagon.

Wolff believes that Hegseth’s lack of independent political thinking and experience is precisely what helped him secure his current position. In his view, during Trump’s second term, the president wanted someone to lead the Pentagon who would not challenge him or create friction within the administration.

A similar problem arose during Trump’s first term after he appointed James Mattis, a retired Marine Corps general, as defense secretary. Mattis was willing to stand up for his own views.

“He holds his current position not because of competence, experience or past achievements, but precisely because he lacks all of those things,” Wolff said of Hegseth.

According to the journalist, Trump eventually came to despise Mattis because he dared to draw on his professional experience when making important decisions. “That is why Trump, upon becoming president for the second time, hires ‘Colonel Vodka’ to run his Department of Defense,” Wolff wrote.

Hegseth had previously been one of several Fox News hosts who sought positions in Trump’s first administration. At the time, the president chose not to appoint him, although Hegseth, according to Wolff, actively campaigned for a position in government.

“Hegseth was considered by Trump’s aides one of the most shameless, pathetic and desperate Fox News hosts trying to get into the administration,” Wolff claims.

According to Wolff, Hegseth repeatedly put himself forward for the position of secretary of veterans affairs or deputy secretary, but even Trump considered such an appointment too ambitious at the time.
