“Cinematic, Cosmopolitan and Wonderful”: Vogue France Features a Dream Wedding in Armenia

15:13, October 2

What happens when Armenian wedding traditions meet the cultures of Vietnam, Cambodia and China? Sara-Mae Ngo and Gevorg Ambartsumyan transformed their wedding into a cinematic story where family traditions, French fashion, the music of Charles Aznavour and Armenian culture came together. French Vogue has now chronicled their extraordinary celebration in detail.

Sara-Mae is a business strategist and model of Vietnamese, Cambodian and Chinese heritage, while Gevorg is a corporate lawyer of Armenian descent. Their story began in Berlin, and Gevorg proposed in London in July 2025.

He arranged what appeared to be an impromptu model casting for Sara-Mae, which ultimately turned into a romantic scene: a pianist appeared and played Charles Aznavour’s “She.” The couple later legally married in New York before choosing Armenia for their religious ceremony.

“We wanted to create an event that truly reflected who we are,” Sara-Mae told Vogue France. According to her, the couple have always been drawn to contrasts — old and new, tradition and modernity, East and West.

The Armenian chapter of the wedding began with a traditional ceremony at St. Anna Church. For the occasion, Sara-Mae chose a lace mermaid-style gown created by Parisian designer Antoine Guerin. Creating her bridal wardrobe took around 10 months, resulting in three custom looks featuring corsetry, silk, hand embroidery, pleating and long trains. One of the sources of inspiration was Armani Privé’s 2012 collection.

The Yerevan Opera Theatre holds a particularly special place in the couple’s story. During Sara-Mae’s first visit to Armenia in 2019, Gevorg took her to see Aram Khachaturian’s ballet “Gayane” — the moment when she first truly encountered Armenian culture. Several years later, the theatre became part of their own wedding story.

The musical program continued the celebration of their blended cultural heritage. The newlyweds performed their first dance to Michel Polnareff’s “Love Me, Please Love Me,” cut the wedding cake to “Voyage, Voyage,” and included five songs by Charles Aznavour among the evening’s selections. The celebration concluded with a traditional Armenian bridal dance, which Sara-Mae had specifically learned for the occasion.

French aesthetics were also woven into the story. The couple lived in Paris and continue to return there regularly, so Sara-Mae’s bridal looks were created by a French designer, Gevorg’s suits were made at the Paris atelier Husbands Paris, and French lace was even incorporated into a traditional Vietnamese áo dài.

Yet behind the carefully curated aesthetic was a deeply personal story. Gevorg introduced Sara-Mae to Armenian culture, while she brought the traditions of her Vietnamese, Cambodian and Chinese family into their relationship.

For the couple, the wedding was not simply a meeting of two cultures, but the beginning of a family story of their own.

“We came to this wedding carrying several different stories with us, and we left with the beginning of a new one — our own,” Sara-Mae told Vogue France.
