Rethinking the natural body as landscape. A solo exhibition of Pakistani artist and designer Misha Japanwala has opened at EXPO Chicago.

A new collection of works entitled Topographies reimagines the natural body as landscape. Japanwala depicts bodies with natural folds, lumps and fat, resulting in colorful casts of the human form.

The project began with an open call that invited people to visit the artist's home and make a cast of her body, documenting every curve, scar, and stretch mark. Through an open call, a group of women and non-binary people from South and Southeast Asia, aged between 20 and 50, was selected.

Each model is made in vibrant shades of blue, lavender, ocher and red, and is intended to depict “a body that is joyful, leisurely and playful, refusing to hide and insisting that it is exactly as it is.”

Each sculpture in Japanwala's Topography is named after a geological formation, further emphasizing the body's affinity with nature and natural landscapes.

Aiming to challenge our collective perception of beauty and remove any element of shame, the series celebrates fatty flesh, muscle and scar tissue as if it were a beautiful work of nature.
