8 former SpaceX employees sue Elon Musk: He 'treats women like sex objects'

11:30, June 13

Eight former SpaceX employees are suing one of the world's richest men, Elon Musk, alleging that he personally ordered them fired after they wrote an open letter raising concerns about sexual harassment at the company.

All eight employees—four men and four women—were fired in June 2022 after publishing a letter alleging that the CEO's "conduct in the public sphere is a frequent source of distraction and embarrassment for us." Also, the letter asks SpaceX executives to condemn Musk's behavior and argues that the company must "quickly and clearly separate itself from Elon's personal brand."

In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs accuse Musk of "treating women as sex objects who are judged by their bra size and bombarding the workplace with lewd sexual banter."

The lawsuit, filed in California state court, alleges also several scenarios, including sexually explicit comments made at work and one in which a male co-worker invited a female employee to a sex party. The employee says that although she reported the incident to HR, no action was taken and her colleague was promoted soon after.

The day before, The Wall Street Journal published a story alleging that Musk had sexual relationships with at least two SpaceX employees, one of whom was an intern whom he eventually hired as a member of his executive team.

The third woman who left SpaceX said that Musk asked her several times to bear his children. After she refused, she was denied a raise and given a poor performance review.

These eight employees are involved also in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) case in which they allege their terminations violate US labor laws. In response, SpaceX is suing the NLRB, arguing that their actions violate the US Constitution.
