Flowers for the home and beyond: A simple life hack for lush hydrangea blooms

20:16, June 20

Hydrangeas are a wonderful addition to your garden—given their stunning blooms and fast growth rate. But with a simple life hack, you can help them bloom even more magnificently.

Gardening expert John Moore says adding coffee grounds to hydrangea soil helps keep this flower hydrated by helping its roots absorb water, reports The Daily Express.

“Hydrangeas respond well to coffee grounds in the soil. Most people use coffee grounds to change the color of hydrangea flowers from pink to blue because it makes the soil more acidic, but it is also useful for keeping the soil moist between waterings.”

Coffee grounds are acidic, and they will help hydrangeas because the soil will contain more iron, manganese and phosphorus, which the plant needs to bloom. Not only hydrangeas turn a bright blue or soft purple color, but they serve also as a natural pest control, as slugs hate the smell and texture of coffee and will not crawl on flowers in the garden.

How to use coffee grounds for hydrangeas

To start, all you have to do is sprinkle coffee grounds over the top of the soil and let them decompose. You can also add coffee grounds directly to the soil or compost bin—but be careful, as not all flowers and plants like acidic soil.

However, you will also need to regularly test your soil with a pH tester to ensure the soil is becoming more acidic—but drinking just a small amount of coffee will help your hydrangeas.
