Labubu heads to Hollywood

22:18, December 20

The mischievous, wide-eyed character Labubu, a global phenomenon among collectors, is officially making its way to Hollywood. Sony Pictures has signed acclaimed director Paul King, known for Paddington and the box office hit Wonka, to helm a live-action adaptation of the beloved “kidult” toy, reports Hypebeast.

The project is in early development and will be produced alongside Department M and Wenxin She. King’s selection is strategic: he has a proven track record of transforming quirky, beloved IP into heartfelt cinematic successes. Wonka grossed $635 million worldwide, while the Paddington series earned nearly $500 million and received critical acclaim for its warmth and visual creativity.

Labubu, created by artist Kasing Lung as part of the “The Monsters” series, started as a designer vinyl toy but quickly became a cultural icon, fueled by celebrity endorsements and a massive social media presence.

Plot details remain under wraps, but the “live-action” designation suggests a hybrid format similar to Paddington, placing the character in a real-world setting. With King at the helm, fans can expect a perfect blend of Labubu’s cheeky yet charming personality with the visual wonder and emotional depth that define King’s films.
