Bohemian Rhapsody was released in China in mid-March, and government censors cut out all the gay references, BBC reported.
Several minutes of footage were edited out of the film, including scenes of two men kissing and the word “gay".
“Explicit and implicit references to Mercury's sexuality were edited out, including an important scene in which he comes out to his then-girlfriend,” the source noted.
According to the Chinese laws, homosexuality was excluded from the list of mental disorders only in 2001. Despite the absence of official prohibitions, the mention of non-heterosexual relationships is not welcomed in culture and social networks.
