Cher received the Icon Award at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards. She was presented with the award by actress Meryl Streep.
After being warmly introduced by Streep, 74, on stage at Los Angeles' Dolby Theater, the 77-year-old Grammy winner began her confession with a funny message to her haters. "There are people who say, 'Does this bitch have more than one pair of pants?' I've been wearing these pants for 40 years. I thought we should come here and accept this award together.”
Reflecting on her six-decade career in the music industry, the “Strong Enough” hitmaker said she was "lucky to have people who stuck with her" over the years. Addressing the audience, the legendary singer noted that “most” of the audience were not even born when she rose to fame as a member of the group with her husband Sonny Bono in 1965.
She encouraged others to "have a dream" and not give up, "no matter what happens." “If you have a dream and you go after it, you will have a wonderful life and it will probably come true,” she urged.
Before welcoming Cher to the stage, Streep, wearing a white Lanvin dress, paid tribute to her co-star's legendary career. “Did you know that Cher has been number one in each of the last seven decades? She is the only woman in US history to do this." She said it “takes courage” to achieve the kind of success that Cher has, “with a huge heart.”
Jennifer Hudson took the stage and performed a version of "If I Could Turn Back Time." Cher then appeared on stage and performed the song "Believe," with Hudson.
