Woody Allen has again hinted at leaving cinema after the release of his latest movie, Coup de Chance.
In an interview with Air Mail, when asked whether Coup de Chance would be his last movie, the 88-year-old legendary filmmaker noted that if someone came along who was ready to support the new movie, he would not have the willpower to say no because he has a lot of ideas.
Coup de Chance struggled to release in US theaters after premiering at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, where it received a warm reception. Amid the #MeToo movement, Allen was effectively "canceled" by Hollywood over allegations that he sexually abused his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, in 1992. Social services, acquitted in both cases, have always maintained their innocence.
Allen, who was investigated and cleared by the Yale-New Haven Hospital Child Sexual Abuse Clinic and the New York City Department of Social Services, has always maintained his innocence.
After months of delays and secret screenings, Coup de Chance hit theaters on April 5 in the United States.
“It doesn’t matter to me whether I get ‘canceled’ here or not,” Allen told Air Mail of the US.
The filmmaker said his Oscar-winning Annie Hall played in theaters for "a little over a year" when it was released in 1977. “Currently the release is two weeks in the cinema,” he said. “The whole business has changed, and not in the most attractive way. All the romance of filmmaking is gone."
Allen has previously shared similar sentiments. In 2022, he told Alec Baldwin during an Instagram Live interview that "a lot of the thrill has gone" from filmmaking due to the changing nature of movie distribution.
That same year, he sparked a wave of retirement rumors after a Spanish newspaper reported that he would focus on writing rather than filmmaking, although he later denied these claims.
Despite his latest comments, Allen may well be working on a new movie. In an interview with The New York Times last week, his sister and producer Letty Aronson said the new movie is "in negotiations" and Allen is "working on the script."
