Tokyo City Hall developing dating app to encourage the Japanese to get married, have kids

14:41, June 11

Tokyo City Hall is developing a unique dating app, the Tokyo Futari Story, to encourage its residents to think about marriage and children amid Japan's demographic crisis.

The app's name comes from the word "Futari," which means "two people" in Japanese.

Interested singles must provide their height, job, education, driver's license, and tax records to verify their income and a signed form saying they are willing to marry, AP reported.

While Tokyo City Hall declined to comment on this dating app, it is sponsoring a series of events to provide a meeting platform for singles, couples seeking marriage counseling, and lovers willing to share their love stories, which can be turned into Japanese comics or songs.

Officials hope their quest for romance will not be in vain, given the recent decline in marriage and birth rates in Japan.

The country's birth rate has been falling for more than four decades as the desire to marry and raise children has declined and financial stress has increased.

The ministry noted that the results were the lowest since Japan began collecting statistics in 1899.
