Nearly 100-year-old diamond tie necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels sold for $3.6M at auction

20:25, June 13

A nearly century-old diamond tie necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels exceeded all expectations at a Sotheby's jewelry auction in New York. The stunning diamond-studded tie necklace circa 1929 sold for an impressive $3.6 million.

It was originally expected to sell for $1.2 million, but intense interest in the piece led to the final price being three times its pre-sale estimate. Seven bidders competed fiercely for more than six minutes for this graduated link necklace, but Catherine Beckett ultimately emerged victorious.

This timeless tie necklace is set with mixed-cut diamonds and features elongated, partially rotating tassels. The necklace, with its serpentine silhouette, is not only an exquisite example of Van Cleef & Arpels' exceptional craftsmanship, but also an ode to timeless femininity and grace.

The most expensive Van Cleef & Arpels piece ever sold at auction was the Walska Briolette diamond brooch. This masterpiece, sold at Sotheby's Geneva in 2013 for more than $10.5 million, had set a world auction record for the brand.
