Renowned American Armenian musician Serj Tankian posted his photo on Instagram that was taken with slain Turkish Armenian journalist Hrant Dink.
Attached to the photo, Tankian shared his recollection of their meeting and the consequences of Dink's true messages.
“14 years ago today, Armenian Turkish journalist Hrant Dink was assassinated in Istanbul, Turkey, in front of his newspaper offices. Even though the shooter was convicted and imprisoned, the deep state masterminds in the government have still not be held accountable. Hrant was dangerous to the institution of Turkey because he was unafraid to speak truth to power all the while using messages of peace and reconciliation. For years he was tortured in the courts and jailed for his words. He was a true humanitarian and a leading voice in the need for true democratization in Turkey. I met him at the premiere of the film “Screamers” that we were both in. He commended me for speaking truth to power and I remember telling him it’s easy when no one is imprisoning or threatening you, alluding to his true heroic activism. I was in NZ when he was shot. I was in the gym on a treadmill. I jumped off when I saw his murder on the news and burst in tears. Hrant’s vision will one day come true when true democracy overtakes Turkey and creates the impetus for true reconciliation with Armenians in the context of an honest review of history, Genocide, etc. Today we will all remember him as a gentle being who was a lion inside,” Tankian wrote.
Hrant Dink, the editor-in-chief of the Armenian Agos newspaper of Istanbul, was shot dead by Turkish ultra-nationalist Ogun Samast on January 19, 2007, in front of the then office of this newspaper.
In 2011, Samast was convicted of Dink's assassination, but questions still remain about the involvement of Turkish state security forces in the case.
