Photo of slumbering polar pear whitewashed in wildlife wins Photographer of the Year award

15:07, February 8

The photo of a dozing polar bear curled up on an iceberg captured hearts and won the People's Choice Wildlife Photographer of the Year award, CNN reports.

British amateur photographer Nima Sarikhani said she was honored to receive the award for her photo “Ice Bed,” taken off the Norwegian archipelago of Spitsbergen, saying the photo “triggered strong emotions” in those who saw it.  “While climate change is the biggest challenge we face, I hope this photo also brings hope; There’s still time to fix the mess we’ve created,” Sarikhani added.

“Ice Bed” was selected from a shortlist of 25 photos, which had previously been whittled down to around 50,000.  The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum in London. In addition to the winner, there were four other highly commended finalists.  All five photos will be on display at the Natural History Museum in London until June 30.
