Sylvester Stallone underwent seven major surgeries after suffering a broken neck while filming a fight scene with Steve Austin on the set of The Expendables in 2010.
“I did stupid things. I was directing ‘The Expendables,’ and like an idiot, I’m doing the tenth 10, I remember one punch, and I felt something snap,” the 77-year-old Rocky star said on his reality show, "The Stallone Family." “I never got over Expendables 1.”After this film, physically I was no longer the same. I warned people: don't do your own stunts."
According to him, a metal plate was inserted into his neck. The actor also required spinal fusion and treatment for a dislocated shoulder. In a strange twist of fate, while undergoing several early procedures, Stallone ended up sharing a hospital bed next to his Expendables co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was also undergoing surgery for a shoulder injury.
Stallone's wife, supermodel Jennifer Flavin, admitted that she experiences horror every time her husband has to go under the knife. “Sly tries to mask the pain by pretending it didn’t happen. He doesn't like people knowing that he has had so many back surgeries. It's very scary for our family every time Sly has to have surgery because you never know..."
The actor's surgeon reportedly told him that he may have to have "artificial discs" installed on his lower spine in the near future. “It’s very difficult to see my father go through another painful operation,” Stallone’s daughter Scarlet said. “He was in pain throughout my entire childhood. He did everything he could to overcome the pain."
Stallone joked that he would be the perfect choice to play Quasimodo "if there was ever a need for a remake of The Hunchback of Notre Dame."
