A futuristic villa inspired by the movie, Dune, is being built in Dubai. Architecture and design studio Isto has unveiled plans for a nine-bedroom, 2,500 square meter Dragonfly villa inspired by the ornithopters, or winged planes, used in the aforesaid sci-fi blockbuster. The residential building to be built in La Mer will be made primarily of metal to highlight its "agility and graceful architecture," the company said.
“The design inspiration is to imitate the structure of a dragonfly’s wings: the long, flat roofline and the architectural silhouette of two molten wings,” says lead designer Anton Yaroshenko, The National reports.
Lighting installations, metal decorations on the facade, and a wall-mounted gazebo on the interior of the villa will help to reproduce the intricately veined webbed wings and colored markings on the wings of a dragonfly.
Meanwhile, floor-to-ceiling windows will flood the home's interiors with natural light, while also offering stunning views of the sea and Dubai's city skyline.
“Particular attention was paid to the landscape surrounding the villa. Water features are located along the entire perimeter of the Dragonfly,” says Yaroshenko.
The water feature in the right wing of the villa, where a stream of water falls on a stone sculpture, is intended to simulate the feeling of teleportation into the Dune universe, he adds.
The project is currently in its early stages, and construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year. It is designed for a large family and is valued at $35 million to $40 million, according to Dubai-based Isto.
In his 1965 novel Dune, Frank Herbert describes ornithopters as "aircraft capable of sustained flight, flapping their wings like birds." Although there have been various film and television adaptations in the past, it was director Denis Villeneuve who interpreted this plane as having the shape of a dragonfly.
