Brendan Fraser refuses to come to Golden Globes because of harassment

22:29, November 17

The Mummy star Brendan Fraser has given a new interview to GQ magazine, explaining that he will refuse to attend the Golden Globe Awards even if he is nominated or wins for Darren Aronofsky's upcoming drama "The Whale."

The reason for this decision was an incident that happened to him in 2003. At the time, Phil Berk of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) claimed that Fraser had raped the actor, causing the actor to not appear in films for years. He first spoke about the case in 2018.

The actor emphasized that he "will not participate" in the HFPA's awards ceremony, even if he's invited.

"It's because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn't raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that," Fraser told GQ.

In response to reports of harassment, the HFPA issued a statement condemning Berk's behavior but took no disciplinary action against him. Berk himself saw no intent in his actions and viewed his behavior as humor. He was expelled from the organization in 2021 because of his racist remarks.

Fraser also believes that an apology on his part would not be enough, since many other people were hurt by the association's actions.

The 80th Golden Globes will be broadcast live on NBC on the night of Jan. 10-11, 2023. The nominees will be announced on December 11
