“When you see these images, do you think to yourself… is this actually happening in the year 2023?

“The world has stayed silent until now. It stayed silent until we reached this point” says a woman from Artsakh who left everything behind to start from scratch. She is just one of more than 100,000 people who felt they had no choice but to flee.

Today, much like three years ago during the 2020 war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, many individuals and organizations from Los Angeles have gone to Armenia to help.

@artsakhs.nvehr was inspired by the picture of a little boy named “Nvehr” whose family was seeking shelter during the war.

Their work has been ongoing over the years, but now with this humanitarian catastrophe things have really intensified.

After a nearly 10-months blockade of the only road connecting Artsakh to Armenia by Azerbaijan, people were left without food or medicine. Then on September 19, 2023 Azerbaijani’s military launched an attack the civilian population. The result— was the forced surrender of their homeland.
Now the city of Goris, which serves as the entry way into Armenia is flooded with people who feel like they are trapped in bad dream. As they awaken from the shock and nightmare of it all— the reality is —- they have to start over.
This is what a mass exodus looks like.

And now— the Armenian government is facing a sudden increase of its population by nearly 5-percent.
The best word to best describe the situation according to the many people I have spoken with is “chaos.”

Right now, the focus is on providing food and shelter, to help bring the displaced back to life.”
