2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the Rubik's Cube, a puzzle/toy that has been played by one in seven people in the world, which has spawned its own subculture and even surpassed its original purpose by becoming an object of art.
In honor of its 50th anniversary, Spin Master, the parent company of Rubik's Cube, announced a wide range of special releases—from collaborations to new mobile games and much more, Hypebeast reports.
These include the 50th Anniversary Retro Cube, which comes in a case inspired by 1980s cube packaging, as well as classic colored stickers. Next up are Rubik's cubes, small, solvable versions of superhero cubes like Black Panther, Iron Man, and Spider-Man.
The company also has a slew of collaborations planned for 2024, including a Wednesday Addams cube inspired by the title character from Wednesday. Other participants—whose products have yet to be revealed—include Mercedes-Benz, Barbie, Hello Kitty, and the Grateful Dead.
There's also a new mobile-friendly Rubik's Cube called Rubik's Connected X, a Rubik's Gridlock board game, a tactile touch cube for the visually impaired, and a 3x3 Rubik's Cube for easy puzzle solving on the go.
There are also plans to release a mobile game called Rubik's Match, although exact details have not yet been revealed.
“The Rubik's Cube is a work of art,” said Professor Erno Rubik, the cube's inventor. “It comes alive when we try to find our own solutions to problems of enormous complexity. This speaks to the universal values of human nature: curiosity, persistence and ingenuity. Recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Cube is a celebration of these eternal values.”
