Italian has supplanted French as the most attractive language in the world, The Daily Mail reports, citing a new survey conducted by language learning platform Babbel.

Six thousand respondents from the US, UK, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany answered questions about which languages are considered the “sexiest,” “most romantic,” and “most passionate.” And Italian took first place.

“There are certain characteristics of the Italian language that may contribute to its appeal,” Babbel language teacher Noelle Wolff explained to The Daily Mail.  Raising and lowering pitches in spoken Italian can create a musical sound that some people find enticing and attractive,” Wolf said.

"Certain phonetic features, such as the rolling of the 'r' sound, may be distinctive in the Italian language, which many find charming and attractive." German won the "most direct" language category, while British English won the "most polite" language category.
