Top 50: Disfrutar in Barcelona named world’s best restaurant

Disfrutar in Barcelona, Spain is recognized as the best restaurant in the world. This incredibly inventive establishment was voted the restaurant by the World's 50 Best Restaurants organization.

It is run by a team of chefs—Oriol Castro, Mateu Casañas, and Eduard Hatruch—who cooked at the revolutionary El Bulli restaurant. The menu features unique dishes such as Fear: The Prawn, which features seafood surrounded by dry ice. Visitors have to probe through the fog to find the shrimp. There are also sandwiches filled with frozen gazpacho ice cream and the signature pancino, a fried donut filled with caviar.

Three of the top five places went to restaurants in Spain. Restaurant Asador Etxebarri in Axpe was named No. 2, with a menu based on food expertly cooked over charcoal. Madrid’s Diverxo, known for its excellent food and atmosphere, came in fourth place. Only five Spanish restaurants made it into the top 50.

In sixth place was the dynamic Korean menu restaurant Atomix in New York, which took first place in the ranking of US restaurants.

Another notable winner was Bruno Verjus' restaurant Table in Paris, which came in third place. The restaurant is headed by a former food blogger.

Peruvian restaurant Central in Lima, which took first place last year, is now moving into the "Best of the Best" category and is no longer eligible for the Top 50 list. This decision to bring about change at the top of the list has been effective since 2019; previously, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, was named No. 1 twice, and the famous Noma restaurant, scheduled to close in 2025, won five times.
